From Norway.
When Scandinavia (now Norway, Denmark and Sweden) could no longer support its growing population, the Vikings began to search for new land. The Swedes ventured east, the Danes south, and the Norwegians sailed west to become the first Europeans to arrive in North America.
Nordic literary traditions called Sagas recount five separate voyages. Leif Eriksson (son of Erik the Red), was the leader of the second expedition and is credited with landing in the place he would ultimately name "Vinland".
to the New World.
For decades, historians believed Vinland (Land of Wine) was located between Massachusetts and Virginia because of the wild grapes found in these regions.
However, Norwegian archaeologists Helge Ingstad and his wife Anne-Stine countered this view. They believed "Vin" was the old Norse term for grass which reflected the pastures of Newfoundland. In 1960, the Ingstads uncovered a Viking settlement in L'Anse-aux-Meadows on the northern coast of Newfoundland. The site carbon-dated to approximately 1000 AD.
